Clarence “Gerald” Hughes, 94, of Mifflin, Indiana, passed away at his home on Tuesday July 21, 2026, surrounded by his family.

He was born on July 1, 1932, in Mifflin, Indiana, to Armel and Nellie (Pavey) Hughes.

Gerald was a proud United States Army Veteran, who honorably served during the Korean War. Following his military service, he dedicated many years of hard work to the Norfolk Southern Railroad, where he remained employed until his retirement. Gerald was first married to Shirley Fay Wilson, the beloved mother of his children. Later in life, he married Arletta (Brown) Wininger, whom he shared many cherished years together.

A man of unwavering faith, Gerald was a devoted member of Mifflin Community Church where he faithfully worshipped and played a vital role in the life of the congregation. His love for the Lord was evident in the way he lived, served, and cared for those around him.

Gerald cherished his family above all else and had a deep appreciation for the close-knit community of Mifflin. He loved to travel and explore new places. Most of all he loved his family and will be missed by all that knew him.

He is preceded in death by his first wife Shirley, his parents Armel and Nellie Hughes, his grandsons, Jeremy Keith Hughes, Joshua Bryan Hughes, and his sister, Janice Stephenson.

Gerald is survived by his wife Arletta Hughes, children, Keith (Jenny) Hughes, Brenda (Russ) Waffird, grandchildren, Jason (Katie) Waffird, Jerrod (Emily) Waffird, great – grandchildren, Sophie Hughes, Tucker Hughes, Chandler Waffird, Harper Waffird, Knox Waffird, Cooper Waffird, step- children, Kevin (Donna) Wininger, Stanley (Kathy) Wininger, step- grandchildren, Zane Wininger, Zack Wininger, Chelsey Wininger, Gina Grimes, Krissy Leimenn, Kara Lam, his brother, Ronald Hughes and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday July 23, 2026, from 4:00 P.M until 7:00 P.M EST at Denbo Funeral Home in English, Indiana and again on Friday July 24, 2026, from 12:00 P.M until the time of service.

A funeral service will be held on Friday July 24, 2026, at 1:00 P.M at Denbo Funeral Home in English, Indiana with Bro. Lee Brown to officiate. Burial and military rites will follow in Mifflin Cemetery.
